Single filer, standard deduction, 2026 rates. Texas, Florida and Washington use the federal/FICA baseline; California uses the detailed 2026 PIT + SDI model. New York and other states use planning state-tax models that may not include every deduction, credit, local tax or payroll program. How taxes reduce your take-home pay

At $75,000 of gross wages, the standardized 2026 federal/FICA calculation is the same in Texas and California. California then adds state PIT withholding and SDI:

Tax layerTexas / FloridaCalifornia
Gross salary$75,000$75,000
Federal income tax−$7,670−$7,670
Social Security−$4,650−$4,650
Medicare−$1,088−$1,088
California PIT + SDI$0−$4,195
Estimated take-home~$61,593~$57,397

The roughly $4,195 difference in this standardized example is California PIT withholding plus 1.3% SDI. It should not be generalized to every taxpayer because deductions, credits, benefits and local rules can change the result.

The two types of tax rates you need to know

Your marginal rate is the rate on the next dollar of taxable income. Your effective rate is tax divided by the broader income amount being measured. Payroll taxes and state taxes are separate layers, so a combined paycheck deduction percentage should not be confused with a federal marginal bracket.

What this calculator covers — and what to check separately

This calculator covers the taxes that apply to most W-2 employees: federal income tax (using 2026 progressive brackets), state income tax (using full progressive brackets for CA and NY; representative flat rates for other states), and FICA (Social Security + Medicare).

Pre-tax deductions such as eligible traditional 401(k), HSA, or health-plan contributions can reduce taxable wages and therefore reduce tax. The contribution or premium itself also reduces current cash pay, however, so a tax saving should not be described as automatically increasing the paycheck deposit.

For a paycheck that includes FICA alongside state-specific hourly rates, see your state's dedicated calculator: California · Texas · Florida · New York · Washington

Take-home pay calculator FAQs

What is take-home pay?

Take-home pay is the amount left from gross wages after taxes and other paycheck deductions. This calculator models federal income tax, optional employee FICA, and a state-tax estimate; benefits, retirement contributions, credits, local taxes, and other payroll items can change the actual deposit.

How much of my salary do I actually take home?

There is no single percentage for everyone. Under the site's standardized 2026 single-filer assumptions, $75,000 produces about $61,593 after federal income tax and employee FICA in Texas or Florida and about $57,397 in California after PIT withholding and SDI.

What is $75,000 a year take-home pay?

Under the standardized 2026 model, $75,000 is about $61,593/year ($5,133/month) in Texas or Florida and about $57,397/year ($4,783/month) in California. Other states can differ because the calculator's state models vary in detail.

What is $100,000 a year take-home pay?

Gross salary is pay before taxes and deductions. Take-home pay is what remains after the taxes and other deductions that apply to your paycheck.

What deductions come out of my paycheck?

Common deductions include federal income-tax withholding, employee Social Security and Medicare, applicable state or local taxes, health-plan premiums, retirement contributions, and other elected benefits or garnishments.

Does this calculator include FICA taxes?

Yes when the FICA checkbox is selected. It models employee Social Security at 6.2% up to the 2026 wage base and Medicare at 1.45%. It does not model every possible Medicare or payroll-tax edge case.

Is this calculator tax or financial advice?

No. It is a planning estimate. Use your payroll records and official tax guidance for filing or withholding decisions.
