States with no state income tax: take-home pay at every wage level

In states without an individual wage income tax, the state income-tax layer is zero, but employee FICA still applies and some states have separate payroll programs or local taxes on each paycheck. At $20/hour working full time, Texas and Florida are about $685/week; Washington is about $674/week after standard employee state premiums, compared with about $657/week in California and about $653/week in New York outside NYC.

Why state taxes have a bigger impact than most people expect

Federal income tax is the same regardless of where you live — but state income tax varies from 0% to 13.3%, and that difference compounds significantly over time. At $100,000 salary, a California worker has approximately $7,029 more modeled PIT + SDI deductions per year than a Texas worker. Over a 10-year career at the same salary, that is roughly $70,290 in additional deductions before accounting for any investment growth on the difference.

For hourly workers, the impact shows up immediately on every paycheck. At $20/hour working full time, California workers take home approximately $657/week versus $685/week in Texas — about $1,460 less per year under the modeled California PIT + SDI baseline. Workers evaluating job offers in different states, or remote workers choosing where to live, benefit from running their specific numbers through a state paycheck calculator.

State tax structures also affect different income levels differently. Flat-tax states like Arizona (2.5%) and Pennsylvania (3.07%) are low-impact and predictable. Progressive states like California and Oregon start low but escalate quickly — California's effective rate for a $100k earner is approximately 5.9%, not the headline 13.3% top rate that applies only at very high incomes. Understanding the difference between marginal and effective rates is key to accurate take-home pay comparisons. See the marginal vs effective tax rate guide for a plain-language explanation.

The state take-home pay comparison tool lets you enter one salary and compare any two states side by side. For a broader ranking, the best states for take-home pay covers all major states at $50k, $75k, and $100k salary levels.

Paycheck calculator by state: FAQs

Which states have no state income tax?

Nine states impose no individual income tax on wage income: Texas, Florida, Washington, Nevada, Tennessee, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire’s former Interest and Dividends Tax was repealed effective January 1, 2025. Employee payroll programs and local taxes can still differ; Washington, for example, has Paid Leave and WA Cares premiums.

How much does state income tax reduce my paycheck?

It depends on your state and income. At $75,000 salary under this model, Texas and Florida are about $61,592, Washington about $60,552 after standard employee state premiums, California about $57,397, and New York outside NYC about $58,140. Use the quick calculator above to see your specific state's impact, then follow the link to your state's dedicated page for a full paycheck breakdown including FICA.

What is the difference between a flat-tax state and a progressive-tax state?

Flat-tax states apply the same rate to all taxable income — for example, Colorado taxes all income at 4.4%. Progressive states apply increasing rates as income rises — California's rate starts at 1% and reaches 13.3% at very high incomes, but most earners at $50k–$150k pay effective rates of 4–7%. For comparing these structures at your income level, the quick calculator above shows the difference directly.

Does this calculator include FICA taxes?

Yes. The quick state calculator now includes employee FICA along with federal income tax. California, New York, and Washington also use selected state-specific tax/payroll logic; other states use simplified planning estimates that may not capture every credit, deduction, local tax, or payroll program.

Which state gives remote workers the best take-home pay?

For remote workers comparing wage taxes, Texas and Florida are about $79,180 take-home at $100,000, Washington about $77,793 after standard employee state premiums, California about $72,151, and New York outside NYC about $74,320.
