What taxes are taken out of an hourly paycheck in the US?
Every US hourly paycheck has the same federal deductions regardless of state. Here's what comes out:
| Tax | Rate | Who Pays | On $20/hr ($800/wk gross) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal income tax | 10–37% (progressive brackets) | Employee | ~$67–$80/wk (12% bracket) |
| Social Security | 6.2% of wages | Employee (employer matches) | ~$50/wk |
| Medicare | 1.45% of wages | Employee (employer matches) | ~$12/wk |
| State income tax | 0–13.3% (varies by state) | Employee | $0 (TX/FL) to ~$17/wk of CA PIT in the $20/hr example |
| State disability / other | Varies (e.g., CA SDI 1.3% in 2026) | Employee | $0–$10.40/wk at $800 gross |
Federal tax brackets for hourly workers (2026)
Most hourly workers earning $12–$30/hour fall into the 10% or 12% federal bracket on a significant portion of their income:
| Taxable Income (Single) | Federal Rate | Typical Hourly Wage Range |
|---|---|---|
| $0 – $12,400 | 10% | Very part-time or low earners |
| $12,401 – $50,400 | 12% | ~$13.70–$31.97/hour gross (full-time) |
| $50,401 – $105,700 | 22% | ~$31.97–$58.56/hour gross (full-time) |
| $105,701 – $201,775 | 24% | ~$58.56–$104.75/hour gross (full-time) |
Key point: Your effective federal tax rate is lower than your bracket rate because only income above each threshold is taxed at that rate. See the effective tax rate guide for a full worked example. At $20/hour ($41,600/year), the modeled federal income tax is about $2,812/year — an effective federal rate of roughly 6.8% before FICA, not the 12% marginal rate on the top taxable portion.

Why your pay stub can differ from this hourly tax estimate
This calculator converts annualized earnings into an estimated annual federal income-tax amount and employee FICA, then converts the result back to weekly, biweekly, monthly, and hourly take-home. Employer payroll software can produce a different individual check because withholding is calculated by pay period and reflects your Form W-4 elections.
- W-4 filing choices: dependents, other income, deductions, and extra withholding can change federal withholding.
- Pre-tax benefits: eligible retirement, health, HSA/FSA, or other deductions can reduce taxable wages.
- Variable hours and overtime: a high-pay week can withhold differently from a normal week even when annual tax liability is similar.
- State/local taxes: this national baseline intentionally excludes them; use a state calculator where available.
For the federal 2026 assumptions used here, see the IRS tax-year adjustments and Publication 15.

Hourly paycheck tax calculator: FAQs
How do I calculate my hourly paycheck after taxes?
Multiply hourly wage by hours worked for gross pay, annualize the income for tax estimation, subtract estimated federal income tax and employee FICA, then convert the annual net back to your pay period. Add state/local taxes where applicable.
How much is taken out of an hourly paycheck for taxes?
There is no universal percentage. Federal income tax is progressive, employee Social Security is 6.2% up to the wage base, Medicare is generally 1.45%, and state/local taxes vary. Under this site's 2026 no-state-tax baseline, $20/hour at 40 hours/week has an estimated effective federal + FICA rate of about 14.4%.
What is the difference between gross hourly pay and net hourly pay?
Gross hourly pay is your stated wage before taxes or deductions. Net hourly pay is the amount you effectively keep after taxes and other deductions. Use the net hourly wage calculator for a dedicated net-rate view.
Does this calculator include state income tax?
No. This national calculator is a federal + FICA baseline. Use the state calculators for state-specific estimates such as California, Texas, or Florida.
Why does hourly take-home pay vary by state?
State income tax and state payroll deductions can change net pay. Texas and Florida do not impose individual income tax, while California has PIT withholding and a 1.3% SDI deduction in 2026.
How does this hourly paycheck calculator work?
It annualizes hourly wage × hours/week × 52, applies the site's 2026 single-filer federal tax rules and employee FICA, and reports estimated net hourly, weekly, biweekly, monthly, and annual pay.
Does this calculator include overtime?
No. Enter the regular total hours you want to model. For explicit overtime-rate calculations, use the overtime pay calculator.
Is this hourly paycheck tax calculator free?
Yes. It is free and requires no signup. For filing, FreeTaxUSA is an affiliate option for federal returns.
